In a new twist from all the Bigfoot and UFO videos we’re used to, someone is claiming to have captured footage of an extinct Dodo in Costa Rica.
“Guys, i received this video of the follower abhiruchiji blause. It was recorded in costa rica. What do you think it is? Looks like a dodo! Only that the animal has been extinct for over 300 years. Crazy huh? Real or montage? I leave you to find out.”
The above quote is taken from this Facebook page where the video appeared on March 1, 2015. Shared by Cryptomundo, and later by Unexplained Mysteries, it raised the question: Could the Dodo still be alive?
Unfortunately, as amazing as this would be, my first reaction was: this is CGI. Some suggested it was actually CGI on top of a chicken, or perhaps even a puppet. Funny.
The truth? Well. The “footage” was actually taken from another video made by Associação Alternativa TerrAzul and their website Quase Um Dodo (Almost a Dodo), which showcases how close other animals are to becoming dead as the Dodo, as they say.
At the end of the original video — a segment that was of course removed from the one that’s been shared around — the Dodo returns to the camera and puts up a sign that says, “I wish I was real. Help us saving those who still are.”
If you ask me, this is a pretty intriguing way to raise awareness, if that was the intent. It’s also a reminder to double-double-double check those weird videos and images you see on the Internet.
Back here in the real world, the Dodo was a flightless bird, last sighted in 1662. In its time, it could be found on Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean. According to Wikipedia, it was driven to extinction “within less than a century of its discovery.”
